The intent of the Kids Challenge is to get 6-13 year-olds taking part in a fun racing environment in the outdoors and enjoying the natural environment NZ has to offer. The race aims to encourage teamwork, problem solving, sportsmanship and fun. We hope they will face challenges that will encourage them to work with their team-mate, show their determination, allowing them to build grit and develop their resiliency. Mostly to finish the day with a sweaty smile!
GEAR LIST
In longer adventure races teams must carry a lot of safety equipment. We have tried to keep the gear list short as it is not a long race and we want the gear to be manageable. Take the time to enjoy the process of working with your child/team to find their kit and prepare just like the adult racers do!
Compulsory items – Per team member: all items to be provided by participants
- Kids Challenge T-shirt, shorts/trackpants, socks, sturdy athletic shoes
- Swimsuit for kayak leg (clothes worn over afterwards)
- A bike helmet
- Mountain bike. Please check tyre pressure, brakes, seat height
- Rain Jacket
- Small Snack (eg muesli bar, banana)
- Any personal medication for known issues/allergies etc (inhaler, EpiPen etc)
Compulsory items – Each Team must carry (this can be carried by one member or shared):
- Water (Minimum of 300ml)
- Small back pack
- First Aid Kit: can be a small plastic bag with some wet wipes, band aids, tape (strapping)
Other Optional items
- Towel (for after the kayak leg to dry off)
- Bike Gloves (mostly because it feels more adventurous wearing them!)
- Bike shorts (might be more comfortable than regular shorts)
- Just one child can have a backpack holding compulsory gear, but we think if each child has their own backpack and their own water supply it will make them feel more like a racer.
- Thermal/Polyprop/warm clothing to wear over swimsuit for kayaking or under their T-shirt if the weather looks chilly.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Kayaks and paddles will be provided for participants.
- The race organiser will provide Buoyancy Aids (Life Jackets) for water based activities, however, if you have your own (especially if your child is quite small), then it would be great to bring your own as there are limited quantity of small sizes.
- Apply sunscreen to your child prior to the event to allow it to absorb into the skin.
- Change of clothes for afterwards (including shoes/jandals) as we expect kids to get dirty/wet.
